The White House has asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign, press secretary Katie Zakaria said in her debut briefing on Tuesday.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zakaria said shortly after taking questions from reporters for the first time at the White House.
“She’s a great addition to our team and we wish her all the best,” Zakaria said of Guilfoyle, whose position has come under an avalanche of scrutiny following multiple critical articles about her behavior before and after her ambassadorship.
Zakaria did not provide further details. The White House responded to CNBC’s request for further information by addressing Zakaria’s comments.
Less than a day later, President Donald Trump suggested that Guilfoyle, who was previously engaged to his eldest son Donald Trump Jr., could be in jeopardy.
Asked by reporters at the White House if he was considering firing the ambassador, Trump said: “Yes, we are considering it.”
“Well, we’re not happy,” he added.
