The driver of the car involved in the fatal crash that injured Anthony Joshua and killed two of his close friends has been charged by the Nigerian Police with dangerous driving causing death and driving without a license.

Joshua suffered minor injuries in the December 29 crash, which killed Sheena Gami and Latif Ayodele, who were also members of the British boxer’s training team.

The Lexus SUV the men were riding in collided with a stopped truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed early Friday that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, had been arraigned in court and the case was adjourned until January 20 for trial.

Joshua, 36, was taken to hospital, but medical staff deemed “no emergency intervention necessary” and he was discharged on Wednesday.

Kayode was charged with four counts of dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention causing bodily injury and damage to property, and driving without a valid domestic driving license.

The defendants were granted bail in the sum of 5 million naira (£2,578) and remanded until bail conditions are met.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. Monday in Macun, about 30 miles from Lagos. The Federal Road Safety Corps said the Lexus was suspected of traveling over the speed limit and lost control while passing.

Footage posted on social media showed Joshua in pain and dazed as he was rescued from the wrecked vehicle.

A spokesperson for Joshua later confirmed that his friends had died in the accident.

Friends pay tribute to Sheena Ghami and Latif Ayodele, the two passengers who tragically died in the car crash involving Anthony Joshua.

“We are deeply saddened by the deaths of Sheena Gami and Kevin “Latif” Ayodele in a traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria.

“They were both close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team.”

Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, had recently spent time in Nigeria after fighting Jake Paul in Miami.

After a 15-month hiatus from the sport, Joshua made his return with a sixth-round knockout win over the YouTube star on Dec. 19 at Caseya Center.
