Anthony Joshua has flown back to the UK after a close friend and two team members were killed in a car crash in Nigeria.

Joshua suffered minor injuries in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of Sheena Ghami and Latif “Rats” Ayodele, and the former world heavyweight champion was released from hospital on New Year’s Eve.

Gami and Ayodele’s funeral will be held at a London mosque on Sunday.

The Ogun State Police Command on Friday confirmed that the driver of the car involved in the accident, Mr. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged by the Nigeria Police Force with charges of dangerous driving causing death and driving without a license.

The case was adjourned until January 20.

The defendants were granted bail in the sum of 5 million naira (£2,578) and remanded until bail conditions are met.

Friends pay tribute to Sheena Ghami and Latif Ayodele, the two passengers who tragically died in the car crash involving Anthony Joshua.

A spokesperson for Joshua confirmed the deaths of his friends, saying: “It is with the deepest sadness that we confirm the passing of Shina Gahmi and Kevin ‘Latif’ Ayodele in a road accident in Lagos, Nigeria.”

“They were both close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team.”

Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, had spent time in Nigeria following his first knockout win over Jake Paul in Miami since losing to compatriot Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
