RFU backs head coach Steve Borthwick despite ‘very disappointing result’ | Rugby Union News

England RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney is confident in Steve Borthwick’s side despite a heartbreaking defeat to Italy in Rome.

After humiliating defeats to Scotland and Ireland in the Six Nations, Italy made history by defeating England 23-18 in Rome on March 7 in what was considered a must-win match.

That puts even more pressure on Borthwick. England travel to Paris on the final weekend to take on France, who are heavy underdogs and are chasing the title, but need a shock win to regain their two points in the tournament.

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney remains confident in England despite recent run of form

“We’ve been on a 12-game winning streak, but the last three games have been very disappointing and we feel the same way as everyone else,” Sweeney said.

“Steve and his coaching team are working hard to improve and we remain fully committed to supporting them and the players ahead of this weekend’s game against France and the Nations Championship.

“Part of that support is talking openly about what went wrong in this Six Nations so that we all have a clear understanding of how we can overcome those challenges together. That’s something we’ll be talking about and working on over the coming days and weeks.”

“We will work together to understand and rectify why we did not meet expectations and expectations in the lead-up to these games.

“England fans rightly expect a team that learns and grows through adversity and I am confident this group will do everything they can to achieve that.”
