Bayern Munich scored two late goals that night to beat Real Madrid 4-3 and win 6-4 on aggregate in a thrilling Champions League quarter-final.
Madrid took the lead three times that night to equalize, but Bayern fought back each time in front of their home fans in Munich. Luis Díaz’s goal in the 89th minute, just after Eduardo Camavinga was given a red card, finally got Madrid sent off, allowing Michael Oliseh to shine even more.
It was a special game with five goals scored in the first half alone, but the 15-time European champions were eliminated. It could become another tradition for Vincent Kompany’s Bayern team to reach the semi-finals against holders Paris Saint-Germain.
Manuel Neuer had been widely praised for his man-of-the-match performance in the Spanish capital, but it was his sloppy pass that caused confusion for Arda Güler 35 seconds later. It was just the first of a series of goaltending mistakes in the game.
Andriy Lunin allowed Aleksandar Pavlovic to shoot from the line and Neuer had good possession but was unable to prevent Arda Güler’s free-kick. Harry Kane restored Bayern’s lead. Kylian Mbappe equalized. That too before the break.
It was Camavinga’s foolish second yellow card that cost Madrid, although the tie remained at four points for most of the second half despite close goals from Olise and Mbappe. Substitute brought Kane down and prevented a restart. Expensive calls.
Dias broke the resolve of Alvaro Arbeloa’s side soon after, almost conceding that the Spanish giants would endure another trophy-less season. PSG will be a formidable opponent for Kompany’s Bayern side in the top four, but they still have a chance of winning the treble.
Arbeloa slams red card as ‘unbelievable’
Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa told TNT Sports.
“I just can’t believe they would send a player off for this kind of behavior. It’s unbelievable. There’s no way you could get sent off for something like this in a game like this.
“We’re really sad, we’re really angry, we’re really disappointed. And we think all of this is a little bit unfair.”
Kane reaches 50 goals of the season
Kane became the first English player to score 50 goals for a major league club in Europe in 95 years.
After the match, the England captain told TNT Sports: “This is a reward for a lot of hard work, not just from me but from the team. It wouldn’t have been possible without the players around me.”
“For me it’s just about continuing to do that. I have six weeks left until the summer World Cup in a Bayern shirt. I just want to stay fit and sharp and be able to help the team.”
“I feel like whenever I get a chance, I can make the keeper work and get quick shots. I was happy to score today, but I’ll score goals, make assists, defend, do whatever it takes to help the team. I’m enjoying being with these guys.”
Speaking about the match itself, Kane said: “It was a tough game. We knew it was going to be difficult. Real Madrid and the Champions League have a special connection and we need to be at the highest level to beat them and knock them out. I think we achieved that.”
“The first half was a little crazy, obviously the worst start. But we came back into the game well and looked like the more dangerous team. But they had guys in transition who could really do damage, and that’s what punished us.”
“We had to be more patient in the second half. We knew as the game went on we were going to get stronger, fitter and more physical. And we were able to take our chances at the end.”
