Tottenham are now two points clear of the relegation zone with two games remaining after being held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds.
Matthijs Tell went from hero to zero with a spectacular opening goal, before a dangerous overhead kick that caught Ethan Ampadu inside the area earned him a penalty, which was awarded a spot-kick after a VAR review.
The draw is a boost for West Ham. That means if they win against Newcastle on Sunday, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports, they will move ahead of Spurs in the table.
Tottenham’s next game is against Chelsea on Tuesday 19th May, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Leeds almost scored in the 13th minute of stoppage time through Sean Longstaff, but he was denied by Antonin Kinski’s best save of the season, who managed to force his shot over the crossbar.
There was still time for a final appeal for a possible foul on Lucas Nmeka on the returning James Maddison, but it was waved off by referee Jared Gillett and VAR.
On the other hand, Leeds certainly played with great concentration and will be playing in the Premier League from next season. Los Blancos’ top flight status was secured after West Ham lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday.
A season to forget for Spurs is coming to an uneasy conclusion.
Spurs came alive midway through the first half with Roberto De Zerbi, the manager who oversaw the win, constantly giving instructions on the touchline, and Tell was able to split between two defenders before his shot was deflected, before Parinha leveled the score from closer.
Spurs had an intense period after the break and Tell’s moment of magic provided the breakthrough in the 50th minute.
Polo’s corner kick was cleared by Tell, who took the touch and curled a wonderful curl into the far corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Randall Kolo Muani came out from behind to tee up Richarlison and it should have been 2-0, but he burst into flames.
Leeds then received the gift of a spot-kick from Tottenham scorer Ter Erdo.
After Spurs had dealt with the first ball into the area, an acrobatic clearance attempted by Tell caught Ampadu in the face and a penalty was awarded after a lengthy VAR check and pitchside monitor review, despite referee Gillett ordering play to continue.
Calvert-Lewin drilled a shot down the bottom to give West Ham a lifeline.
De Zerbi returned to the bench with five minutes remaining and brought on Maddison, but Kinski brilliantly thwarted a longstaff in 13 minutes of stoppage time, and Maddison waved off a strong penalty appeal after working with Nmeka to share the spoils.
De Zerbi: “I hope Leeds play like that against West Ham”
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi told Sky Sports.
“We played a good game, not great, but there was a lot of pressure. We didn’t settle down.
“We wanted to win right away. I think at the end of the day we have to fight until the end of the season. Leeds played a good game.
“We want them to play like this against West Ham because it’s the right thing to do.
“I’m disappointed that we conceded a penalty because Matthijs Tell scored a great goal. He’s very young and it doesn’t matter to me. I’m happy with his attitude and mentality.”
“We didn’t play well, but this is what fighting relegation is like. You can’t play every game calmly. We have to improve and change our habits. Fighting against relegation is different from fighting in the Champions League.”
