US President Donald Trump announced that a cease-fire agreement with Iran has been reached and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will begin.
The agreement was later confirmed by Iran’s deputy foreign minister on Sunday, and would immediately end hostilities between Iran and the United States.
President Trump said the deal would allow free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely closed since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Dec. 28.
“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is complete,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Congratulations, everyone! I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and at the same time authorize the immediate lifting of the U.S. naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
President Trump’s announcement came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the X agreement, saying it would end fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon.
“After intensive consultations, I am pleased to announce that a peace agreement has been reached between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Both sides have declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” Sharif wrote.
The official signing ceremony will be held in Switzerland on Friday, June 19, he added.
“We would like to thank the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their efforts in finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict. We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to our brothers who participated in this mediation effort and to the great leadership of the State of Qatar for their assistance in reaching this agreement,” Sharif wrote.
“We are also particularly grateful to the visionary leaders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkiye for their significant contribution in this regard. With the agreement in place, the mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation consultations will lay the foundation for technical consultations and a formal signing ceremony.”
Qatar welcomed the announcement and praised the partnership with Pakistan that contributed to the realization of the MoU.
“The State of Qatar welcomes the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran on addressing outstanding issues between the two countries, including ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and considers it an important step towards strengthening sustainable peace and promoting economic growth regionally and internationally,” the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to X.
