After the Democratic Party achieved a once-in-a-generation landslide victory over the Republican Party in the US midterm elections, current party leader Chuck Schumer expressed confidence that his party would control the Senate majority, exceeding expectations.

“I will be re-elected as majority leader,” the New York Democrat told reporters in Washington on Wednesday.

But not all newly elected Senate Democrats are open to the idea of letting Schumer, 75, a House stalwart, take charge of the agenda again, as calls for change among voters reach fever pitch in this week’s pivotal elections.

At least seven Democratic freshmen have publicly indicated or explicitly stated that they do not intend to support Mr. Schumer in next month’s leadership vote.

Incoming Illinois Sen. Juliana Stratton said through a spokeswoman that she does not support Schumer. Kansas Sen.-elect Adam Hamilton told CNN in September, “I don’t support Schumer.” Maine Sen.-elect Troy Jackson said Monday that he told Schumer he would “support others.” In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Michigan Sen. Abdul El-Sayed reiterated his support for his soon-to-be Democratic colleague, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, as leader. “It’s time for new leadership,” Minnesota Sen. Peggy Flanagan told reporters Wednesday. “Voters want a new generation of leadership in the Senate,” New Hampshire Sen.-elect Chris Pappas said in an interview last week. Texas Sen. James Talarico has called for “new blood” in Washington, and since his election he has said he would “like to hear about[Schumer’s]vision” for the Senate before announcing his support.

While Mr. Jackson has publicly questioned Mr. Schumer’s ability to connect with working-class voters, Mr. Flanagan’s staffers said they want the next senator to be a “progressive champion” who can guide the Democratic Party through the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term and into 2028.

New members like El-Sayed may not be popular after Schumer endorsed opponent Haley Stevens, a former public health official, in Michigan’s Democratic primary.

Schumer, the first Jewish Senate majority leader, often became a central figure in the party’s cultural and foreign policy debates.

In remarks posted online in February, Schumer told Jewish leaders in New York City that one of his core missions was to “fight for aid for Israel.”

“Under my leadership, we provided more security assistance to our ally Israel than ever before,” he said. “We will continue to do that.”

Mr. Schumer has also faced intense criticism for not doing enough to block Mr. Trump’s Cabinet confirmations. Some have accused the leader of backing a Republican bill to reopen federal agencies during last year’s government shutdown and then backtracking without receiving anything in return.

Critics of the party, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, called it a “capitulation” that would abandon key Democratic priorities such as health care. Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib said Schumer should have resigned as party leader over the issue.

Democratic leaders said Wednesday that their party’s new Senate plan includes launching an investigation into the Trump administration, challenging the president’s policies and ending the Iran war.

But for some current lawmakers like Van Hollen, that’s not enough. He recently told Bloomberg that Democrats should not commit to Schumer without a promise of a “bold agenda.”

Before Tuesday’s election, campaign officials for Sen. Jon Ossoff, who was easily re-elected, would not say whether the Georgia Democratic Party would support Schumer.

“There is no answer,” an Ossoff official told Al Jazeera. “You can do all the fantasy football stuff later.”

When Democrats return to Washington next week, voters and Democratic advocacy groups are likely to put pressure on them to support an alternative candidate.

Indivisible, a U.S.-based progressive group that calls itself a movement to “stop the rise of authoritarianism,” released a memo on Thursday detailing its opposition to Schumer, after calling for new leadership after the election.

“Everyone with a Democratic Senate seat, including those with newly elected senators heading to Washington, D.C., should demand a contested leadership election instead of Mr. Schumer’s vacant lot,” the memo said.

“Democrats who plan to operate as usual, or who are not willing to fight at a level that matches the people’s demands for action, are not qualified to lead the party at this time. Who will lead the party in this era should be an open question, not a coronation. The time has come to define what the next era of the Democratic Party will be.”

Al Jazeera asked Schumer’s office how he plans to address these concerns and whether he has spoken with disgruntled Democrats, but has not yet received a response.

To win re-election, Schumer will need a simple majority in the Democratic Senate caucus, which is expected to consist of 54 to 56 members, but he still has reliable allies, having previously served as majority leader during former President Joe Biden’s term.

One of them was Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who told ABC on Wednesday he praised Schumer’s handling of the midterm elections, saying he achieved “one of the most historic landslide victories” for his party.

“We’re going to have a discussion as a family,” Booker said. “But I think America should give Chuck Schumer his due for what we were able to accomplish.”

Schumer hit back Wednesday when asked about the growing criticism of his leadership, saying Tuesday’s election was “not about me.”

“This is about the American people, what they want, what they need, and what we can do to help them. Plain and simple.”
