In one scenario, SK Hynix would lease part of Intel’s semiconductor manufacturing facility in Ohio, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter. According to Reuters, Intel and SK Hynix may form a joint venture with Intel or a major cloud company.

SK Hynix may also consider other ways to structure the deal, the news agency reported. One of the people told Reuters the talks were exploratory and no decisions had been made yet.

If the deal goes through, it would be a major victory for Intel, which has been aiming to acquire powerful customers in the manufacturing and foundry businesses, a key pillar of CEO Lip Vu Tan’s strategy. The deal could also advance the U.S. government’s efforts to bring more semiconductor manufacturing to the United States.

SK Hynix is one of the world’s leading suppliers of the key component High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Nvidiachips. It also manufactures other types of memory chips essential for AI applications.

A deal between Intel and SK Hynix to make advanced memory like HBM could face opposition from the South Korean government because the technology is considered sensitive, Reuters reported, citing three people familiar with the matter.

SK Hynix, which listed its American Depositary Receipts on the Nasdaq in July, has benefited greatly from the AI boom. A rush to build data centers has led to memory chip shortages and soaring prices, allowing SK Hynix and rival Samsung to reap huge profits.

SK Hynix’s Korean-listed stock rose 400% compared to last year.
