Britain’s King Charles plans to put pressure on senior British leaders. NvidiaOpenAI and Anthropic speak about AI safety at Scottish summit.
Buckingham Palace said Thursday’s event will focus on how AI can be used to benefit society and the natural world, with discussions around common principles for technology development.
“The development of AI, its content and pace, is both interesting and equally deeply concerning,” the king will tell the gathering, according to excerpts of the speech shared by CNBC.
“The people of our world, who cherish our humanity and its essential moral components, anxiously seek your reassurance that we will not lose control of our destiny.”
Charles will also welcome senior representatives from the tech giant’s in-house AI lab, Google DeepMind, UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, and other attendees convened by the King’s Trust, the King’s Foundation and the Sustainable Markets Initiative.
The king will ask participants about harnessing the power of AI “with a focus” on safety, and building international cooperation and consensus to achieve this, the palace said.
“Decisions made during these formative years will shape the world we inherit for future generations,” Charles added. “So the challenge before you is not just to advance technology, but to ensure that it serves humanity, communities, and the natural world.”
The King previously gave virtual remarks at the 2023 AI Safety Summit in the UK, in which he said: “We are witnessing one of the greatest technological leaps in the history of human endeavor.”
The debate over AI safety has intensified over the past two weeks, with OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk are in rare agreement in calling for a slowdown in technology development and regulatory oversight.
Others, including US President Donald Trump, meta Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang are pushing back against calls for more regulation.
AI pioneers who helped develop technological advancements have also warned of potentially devastating risks associated with the functionality of these systems.
Meanwhile, debate is heating up in Washington, citing concerns. President Trump on Monday bristled at the growing calls to regulate AI, although some Democratic and Republican lawmakers have pushed for legislation to check advances in AI.
