shares of Softbank Group Japanese markets opened for the first time this week after a three-day weekend, surging more than 7% on Thursday as technology investors announced an $11.1 billion bond issuance to help finance a growing bet on OpenAI.
SoftBank announced Thursday that it has issued $10 billion in dollar-denominated straight bonds and 1 billion euros ($1.14 billion) in euro-denominated bonds. The company said the proceeds will be used to fund the third and final tranche payment of $10 billion of its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, which is expected to close on October 1, and for general corporate purposes.

The bond sale highlights the scale of CEO Masayoshi Son’s efforts in artificial intelligence. SoftBank agreed to invest $30 billion in February, bringing its total investment in the ChatGPT maker to $64.6 billion and will have a roughly 13% stake upon completion.
The latest funding comes as investors are increasingly scrutinizing how SoftBank will finance its vast AI ambitions and the impact of increased leverage on its balance sheet.
