Samsung Electronics and its affiliates will invest a total of $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, an artificial intelligence infrastructure company launched by global investment firm KKR and backed by AI darling Nvidia.

Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it will invest $500 million, with Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance contributing the rest.

The investment comes as Helix seeks to address increasing competition in the AI infrastructure market by targeting both data center deployments and the underlying power infrastructure needed to support them.

The deal also allows Samsung to leverage the capabilities of its entire affiliate, from semiconductors and cooling systems to data center construction and batteries, as it aims to expand its role in building global AI infrastructure.

Launched in June, Helix is focused on the infrastructure needed to support growing AI demands, including hyperscale data centers, power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and fiber optic networks.

The company is led by Adam Selipsky, former CEO of Amazon Web Services. KKR, Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia, and US power company Vistra are Helix’s founding investors.

KKR said the investment is in addition to more than $10 billion in funding already committed to the company.

Samsung said this investment, along with Helix, will help accelerate the global rollout of AI data centers and deepen cooperation between participating companies.

KKR has invested more than $75 billion globally in digital infrastructure and power, and has invested approximately $9 billion in South Korea since 2009.
