meta The new artificial intelligence agent Muse promises to make everything from booking appointments to creating playlists easier, but the rollout of agent shopping in particular is making waves in the tech and retail space.
Shopping has quickly become one of Muse’s biggest drivers, according to a Meta spokesperson.
Once the initial setup is complete, shopping is as simple as having a Muse agent help you find the items you’re interested in. Brand, price, and availability can be specified as desired.
Agents browse retail sites for products that match your request and make recommendations within the Muse app and website. Clicking on a listing will open directly to the retail website or within the Muse app, with a button to check out to an agent.
If you choose to checkout with Muse, Muse will prepare your checkout and confirm it by displaying an “authorization card” with your order details. If you haven’t given Muse access to your email address, name, and address, we’ll also need them. For payments, Muse can be checked out with Link by Stripe and Meta’s technical payment partners. According to Meta, Link “generates a one-time use card, so the actual card details remain hidden.”
paypal was also announced as a payment provider for Muse, but is not yet available.
MetaConnect CEO Mark Zuckerberg said MetaConnect charges a small fee on transactions.

Muse “Connector”
Meta announced a series of partnerships on September 23rd that will provide what the app calls an “official fast lane” to the Muse agent platform, but not all of the so-called “connectors” are active yet.

ticket masteris part of an already announced partnership that will direct users to its own marketplace to make payments.
“All final purchases are made within Ticketmaster’s secure marketplace, giving fans complete control over their purchasing decisions,” a company spokesperson told CNBC.
Major e-commerce shopping Amazon blocked Muse from purchasing products on its site, saying it violated the retailer’s terms of service. Amazon claimed that Muse stores customer credentials and collects account data, among other issues.
Luca Cian, a professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Management who specializes in psychological responses to AI, said the convergence of shopping into a single agent-based shopping experience will increase competition among shopping giants already competing for the same market.
“The real battle for the muse is between companies, and the consumer is the prize,” Sian told CNBC. “Agency owners own the relationship with shoppers, and all retailers know it.”
Data and privacy concerns
The use of AI in some types of pricing has sparked widespread mistrust among shoppers.
A Morning Consult survey in January found that 59% of U.S. adults said price gouging was a “major concern” regarding AI-driven dynamic pricing.
Retail and e-commerce companies are increasingly using AI to collect customer data and introduce dynamic or personalized pricing, the Bank of England said.

Walmart CEO John Farner wrote an open letter last week asking customers to be reassured that the company will not use their personal information to implement dynamic pricing on its website or shopping tools. Furner acknowledged that “we’ve heard concerns that companies will use that information and that technology to charge higher fees.”
Beyond price issues, Meta has its own history with data and safety issues. The company has faced a wave of lawsuits over child safety and data security, and recently settled a major federal lawsuit involving a group of state attorneys general for nearly $17 billion.

customer experience
Muse has soared to the top spot apple The iPhone’s App Store of free apps and the Tamagotchi-like charm devices introduced by Zuckerberg further fueled the conversation around agent platforms.
Mr. Sian said that despite distrust of the meta, many people would still use the app because of the gradual trust-building nature of the agents and because “it fragments people.”
“Research shows that perceived control changes behavior. Muse builds on that lesson,” Sian told CNBC. “Those are the right levers. People will be looking to see if they work in practice.”
Mr. Sian said that despite potential safety concerns, consumers are likely to be happy to delegate various “chores” tasks to agents, but may want to purchase more personalized products themselves.
“Replenishment, price comparison, returns, waiting for price reductions. No one feels depressed because the machine does it for them,” Sian said.
