american airlines The company said in an announcement provided exclusively to CNBC on Monday that it joins a growing list of employers pledging to match employees’ contributions to Trump accounts.

The airline announced it will match the $1,000 contribution it makes to the federal government with an additional one-time contribution of $1,000 for the children of its employees.

Approximately 1.4 million children who signed up for a Trump account are eligible to receive $1,000 in seed money from the Treasury Department, according to the latest publicly available data. American Airlines says thousands of children of American Airlines employees may also be eligible for employer matches.

“At American Airlines, our purpose is to care for people on their life journeys, and that includes helping our team members build strong financial futures for themselves and their families,” CEO Robert Isom said in a written statement provided to CNBC.

The U.S. Treasury says more than 50 companies have already pledged some form of contribution to the Trump account for their employees.

In addition to American Airlines, companies including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have offered to fully match the government’s $1,000 seed contribution.

“It’s encouraging to see that our nation’s largest companies, including American Airlines, are supporting this effort by providing matching contributions to their employees,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a written statement provided to CNBC.

Who is eligible to participate in Trump Account Match?

Trump accounts, also known as 530A accounts, are available to U.S. children under the age of 18. Parents or guardians of infants born between 2025 and 2028 who open an account will receive a tax-free initial deposit of $1,000 from the Treasury Department.

Once the account is opened, a parent, guardian, grandparent, etc. can contribute up to $5,000 annually until the year before the beneficiary turns 18.

The Treasury Department previously proposed regulations that would allow employees to fund their dependent children’s accounts with pre-tax dollars directly from their paychecks.

American Airlines plans to implement that payroll deduction next year once the rules are finalized.

As part of its program, eligible employees will be able to contribute up to $2,500 of their pre-tax income annually to Trump accounts starting in 2027, the company said.

“We are grateful to the Trump Administration and Congress for creating the Trump Account and providing $1,000 federal contributions to eligible children born between 2025 and 2028,” Isom said. “We are proud to build on that investment by matching federal contributions to eligible children of team members and offering other eligible team members the opportunity to make pre-tax contributions to their children’s accounts.”

The company said pre-tax contribution options are available to about one-third of its approximately 140,000 employees worldwide.

Trump accounts are just one of several tax-advantaged savings vehicles for children, but financial experts generally recommend signing up if it means receiving free money from the government or employer.
