Taiwan’s benchmark ThaiEx rose to an intraday high of 48,601.53 on Tuesday, led by gains in the tech sector, following an AI-led rally on Wall Street fueled by investor optimism over early signs of success for Meta’s AI agent.
Shares of Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing giant TSMC rose 0.40%, MediaTek rose 7.88% and Delta Electronics rose 2.67%. All three stocks are major players in the semiconductor industry and the largest companies by market capitalization in the Taiex index.
Tuesday’s intraday high for the Thai Exchange was the first in about three months since it hit a record high in June. Thanks to the AI boom and Taiwan’s status as one of the world’s most important semiconductor and hardware supply chains, investors are seeing strong overall growth in Taiwanese stocks so far this year.
According to a July note from Standard Chartered, “Taiwan’s stock market is dominated by the technology sector, accounting for approximately 88% of the benchmark market index, mostly in the semiconductor industry.”
Standard Chartered added: “Taiwan produces more than 90% of the world’s most advanced semiconductor chips, especially those smaller than 7 nanometers.”
Taiwan overtook Canada to become the world’s sixth-largest stock market in May, according to HSBC data that tracks global stock market capitalization rankings.
Meanwhile, traders are also keeping an eye on developments regarding Taiwan’s August export orders due later today. “The market expects print to remain resilient by 63.0% year-on-year (July: 61.9%), supporting continued AI-related demand,” UOB said in a note dated September 22.
