OpenAI isn’t just chasing productivity software with ChatGPT’s new Pages, Slides, and Spaces feature. AI Lab is currently targeting any application that might work better when integrated with ChatGPT.
During the company’s Dev Day presentation on Tuesday, the AI company announced that developers can now build their own app-like experiences within ChatGPT using plugin extensions.
OpenAI already supports plugins that connect ChatGPT to everyday tools like Slack, SharePoint, Airtable, and Google Drive, but the new plugin extension gives your app a dedicated home in the ChatGPT sidebar.
Additionally, developers will be able to build interactive panels that allow users to interact with tools while chatting with ChatGPT. The experience could also include a file viewer that supports any file format used by a developer’s product, the company said.
Additionally, OpenAI says it will make it easier for developers to build plugins and streamline the discovery process for end users. Developers get a new Plugin Creator tool for building and submitting plugins to the plugin directory via a redesigned flow that provides clearer feedback.
Meanwhile, the company says it has improved how plugins are ranked and recommended in the directory and when they appear in conversations. Users can also authorize their access needs individually when selecting the plugins they want to use.
Additionally, ChatGPT sites, which are lightweight websites that users can build using ChatGPT, can also host these plugins. For example, this allows someone to share their app with a colleague and use that app with their own connection data and permissions.
OpenAI also said it would add support for the proposed MCP Events specification, which would allow plugins to initiate automation based on events within connected apps. The company also makes it easy to add and manage automation.
