Forget about overtime. This construction worker hit the mother lode.
Eight construction workers in Belgium discovered gold coins and bars worth 9 million euros ($10.5 million) last Tuesday, authorities said.
They made the gold discovery under a building they were renovating in the city of Dendermond, about 30 miles northwest of Brussels.
“Apparently, during the excavation operation, the drill bit got stuck and hit a gold bar,” Dendermonde police chief Patrick Fays told Belgian broadcaster VTM.
He said after the discovery, crews contacted the property owner, who then called police.
The police chief added that careful inventory work was carried out under camera surveillance at the police station before the money was sealed to avoid future disputes.
Images posted on the Dendermond police Facebook page show a metal bucket filled with gold coins and a table covered in gold bars.
A police investigation is underway to determine how the money ended up there and who legally owns it, according to the Associated Press.
“We hope they can use it to fund worthy causes, but that will be determined by further investigation and legal proceedings,” Faiz told VTM.
