The boos returned to Ibrox as Rangers fell to the bottom of the table after four consecutive defeats in the Europa League.

Further banners against the club’s board were unfurled as the team failed to recover from defeat to Celtic in the League Cup.

Roma started the night just three points behind Danny Rohr’s side and took the lead when Mathias Soule effortlessly slotted home Brian Cristante’s ball.

They doubled their lead before halftime. The Rangers defense switched off and Lorenzo Pellegrini curled the ball into the net.

Rangers are currently one of only two teams yet to register a point, having scored just one goal and conceded eight.

Europe’s troubles continue

Sunday’s Old Firm defeat was a setback for Rolle, but they bounced back on Thursday with the introduction of Max Aarons, Mikey Moore, Jaydee Gassama and Conor Barron in place of absentees Derek Cornelius, Mohamed Diomande, Danilo and Cerro Asgaard.

Roma, who lost their last two Europa League games, were without key players Evan Ferguson, Paulo Dybala, Angelino and Leon Bailey, but this did not negatively affect coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

Ukraine international striker Artem Dovvik was brought on for the lead, and sloppy play from Gers defender Jayden Meghoma resulted in a corner kick for Roma, which put the Serie A side ahead in the 13th minute.

Pellegrini fired a shot from the right, captain Cristante flicked it on and Sule slotted home at the back post.

It was too easy.

Moments later, Rangers’ much-maligned striker Youssef Cermiti fired from an angle from the Roma melee, and Sule tested goalkeeper Jack Butland with a powerful drive that was headed in by Mario Hermoso from a corner kick.

The Italian team added another point when Dobubuk collected a pass from Gianluca Mancini and, with little pressure from defender John Soutard, fed the ball to Pellegrini, who slotted the ball confidently past Butland with his side foot.

After Roma keeper Miles Svillar spilled Gassama’s cross, Mancini blocked Moore’s shot in a quick Gers counterattack.

When Asgort replaced Meghoma at the start of the second half, leaving Rangers with a back four, the home fans voiced their disapproval of Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, with criticism of both players increasing as the match progressed.

In the 58th minute, Moore narrowly missed the far post from the edge of the box, Celmiti fired again and found the side netting, and Asgord had a shot that went wide.

Roma went on a quick break in the 69th minute, but Zeki Selik managed to tip Kostas Tsimikas’ knockdown onto the bar from two yards remaining, and Butland gathered in goal.

It was another somber night for Rolle and his Rangers side, but the game was over quickly and without any further drama.

“I want to win this game in the future.”

Rangers head coach Danny Rolle is focusing on the future after defeat to Roma left them bottom of the Europa League with no points after four games.

Rangers head coach Danny Rohr:

“The result is disappointing. In some important moments we didn’t do the right thing.

“I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, this game is at a time where we need to grow.

“We want to win this game in the future, but at the moment there are a lot of things we need to improve on.

“In the second half, we changed our game and put another player on the pitch. Until the 75th minute, I felt like if we used that moment to get our faith or confidence in the right direction, something might happen.”

“But we couldn’t do that. And in the end what we played was a very experienced team.”

Dangerous defense proves expensive again

Alison Conroy of Sky Sports:

Rangers, who have lost four games in a row, will need a big comeback if they are to advance to the Europa League finals.

It’s not impossible, but they will need to take something from their last four matches against Braga, Ludogorets, Ferencvaros and Porto to have any hope.

Defensive issues continue to plague them. They have conceded at least two goals in each game this season.

Danny Roll has a lot of issues to solve, but he needs to prioritize vulnerability in the rear. They seemed to be panicking at set-pieces, with Soul scoring the first goal from a corner and John Souter stopping the second goal.

Next up is Sunday’s game against Dundee, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports as they look to progress into the Premiership title race. Although there are still games in hand, they are 14 points behind leaders Hearts and five points behind Celtic.

Fans are frustrated and want to see more positivity on the pitch.

What will happen to the Rangers?
