Nvidia on Wednesday announced a new product that houses seven Vera Rubin AI racks in a shipping container. This is the company’s latest effort to move up the stack to provide a complete system for artificial intelligence computing.
According to Nvidia, the DSX Pod AI Factory is about the size of a standard shipping container and weighs about 28,000 kilograms (about 62,000 pounds). The company says it is designed to be transported by truck over regular roads, and all of the pod’s cabling and liquid cooling are assembled at the factory.
“When it gets to the site, all it has to do is put it in place, connect it to the rest of the other containers, and validate it through final writes and testing,” Ian Buck, vice president of hyperscale computing at Nvidia, said on a call with reporters this week.
According to the company, the DSX Pod AI Factory will reduce the time it takes for new AI data centers to start offering tokens from six months to 14 days. Nvidia said the pod is aimed at customers around the world and could help address deployment challenges faced by European customers.
Nvidia hasn’t announced pricing for the system, but analysts say a single Vera Rubin rack could cost more than $7 million.
The DSX pod is a reference design shipped by Nvidia’s manufacturing partners. Nvidia said it is working with manufacturers including Foxconn, Gigabyte, Lenovo, HPE, Quanta and Pegatron. Nvidia expects deliveries to begin in early 2027.
Once a chip company, Nvidia now provides networking, storage, and other data center needs to customers. The company’s AI systems have evolved from single graphics processing unit chips to servers with four or eight GPUs, then to entire racks, and now to DSX pods, containerized building blocks with which multiple racks are already integrated.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently said on a podcast that “we’ve gone from delivering around $18 billion per gigawatt to around $20 billion per gigawatt to now over $40 billion.” Gigawatts represent the size of data center infrastructure by the amount of electricity used. “My sense is that it will continue to rise.”
